How to Be a Top Photography Writer on Medium

Waking up to a surprise

Life speaks in riddles sometimes.

It can be confusing.

It can be abusive.

Or you can be losing.

But hard work and determination can give you pleasant surprises from what you do.

I woke up this morning like any other day.

I am a creature of habit, and I like to start the day by getting messages replied to first alongside a tall cup of coffee.

I opened my email and found this:

OK, I’m awake.

In less than one month, I am a top writer in the topic of photography.

Thank you

I would like to thank everyone who has been welcoming on my Medium photography journey.

GE McKerrihan, Charles G. Haacker, Rodrigo S-C, and Duvy McGirr were among the first to welcome me here. Thank you!

And a huge thank you to anyone who has read my work also. I appreciate everyone that drops by.

I never set out with a goal to be a top photography writer on Medium, but it is much appreciated.

How you can be a top photography writer too

  1. ABS = Always Be Shooting. You don’t have things to write about if you are not shooting. And if you are not shooting, your photography can suffer.
  2. Photograph and write about what you know. I love hearing unique stories and experiences from my students. Re-creating photos is a great way to learn techniques. But, it is not an authentic voice. So many people are trying to find their voice and copy others. Be yourself and take pictures of who and what you love.
  3. Photograph and write every day. If you set a discipline for yourself, you will up your game.
  4. Write based on your photographs. Sometimes one can inspire the other. I write based on how a picture makes me feel. Write and photograph your heart, and then edit both very well later.
  5. Put your best foot forward. Putting your best foot forward goes back to authenticity. Be honest, and share your triumphs AND mistakes. You will learn, and others will learn too. We’re all in this together.

What’s next

Write and photograph more.

Share things that help others.

Make more friends through the gift of photography.

And to discover and learn new things every day.

When one thinks they know it all, life gives you surprises.

I don’t know it all and don’t have all the answers.

But what I do know is that my camera has given me opportunities that I never dreamed possible.

Thank you for being here.
